Winter Blooms

Kids with Cerebral Palsy say "Thanks Mum"

A group of young children with cerebral palsy put their hands to floristry today to create their own gifts for Mother's Day.  

Pearsons trainer Amanda demonstrated how to make a pretty gerbera arrangement and the kids quickly got the hang of the design!  

Pearsons have supported the Spastic Centre for seven years and will donate $10 from every order placed when customers mention The Spastic Centre when ordering in-store, online or on the phone.

March Floral Styling Tip

We all love to recycle so how about a great tip to re-use your take away food containers or plastic cups. These little plastic bowls and boxes are handy for all kinds of designs. Not only are they waterproof and strong but they are very lightweight! They make a super lining for many different non-waterproof vessels or just wrapped in a leaf or fabric.

Simply wrap a plastic cup or container with a pretty leaf - cordyline leaves are a great choice - both flexible and pretty! Secure the leaf with a piece of twine or ribbon then add water and place your flowers. A single bloom looks great or for more drama use multiple containers and turn one bunch of gerberas into this great display below!

Pearsons Florist Support The Spastic Centre

Pearsons Florist was a proud sponsor of The Spastic Centre’s Might and Power Gala Race Day, held last Saturday 4th July at Rosehill Racecourse. The team at Pearsons worked hard, creating over 60 table arrangements and a range of beautiful hair circlets for promotional staff.

All proceeds from the day will be used to support children’s cerebral palsy therapy services for rural families.  

Cerebral palsy is the most common physical disability affecting Australian children. Despite medical advances, 1 in 400 babies are diagnosed with cerebral palsy. There is no known cure, and for most, the cause is unknown.

Please donate generously to this fantastic cause.

Enrichment Evening for Pearsons School of Floristry students!

Last week, Pearsons School of Floristry hosted their annual Enrichment Evening for their students who are a few weeks away from finishing their courses.  There was an industry panel of speakers who shared thier floristry knowledge in a question and answer forum.  Also a floral demonstration by Helmut Schuster our in-house Master florist from Germany created some inspiring pieces for all who were there.  See photos below.  (Added 15/06/09 by Ruth S)

Mother's Day Preparation!

It's that special day of the year, when we would like to thank Mum for all that she does!  This Sunday, May 10th is Mother's Day!  What better way to express this gratitude and show her how much you care by giving her a beautiful arrangement of flowers!

Sydney Weekender filmshoot!

On the weekend, Sydney Weekender did a film shoot at our Oxford St store for a 1 day workshop.  They filmed our Stylish Design workshop which is running on the 21st June 2009.  The episode will air the week before Mother's Day so watch out for it!  (Sydney Weekender - Saturdays 5.30 pm on Channel 7)

Miranda store opens!

Historic House Christmas Party!

Lumiere Residences Floral Demonstration!

Peonie Roses Season!

After a much anticipated wait, peonie roses are finally in season!  These beautiful flowers are only available for approximately 4 weeks of the year and are one of our florist's favourite flowers.  They range from white, yellow to shades of pink which are sometimes flushed red at the centre. The name dates back to Ancient Greek times and is a flower that is known for its medicinal properties. Check out our season special Perfect Peonies arrangement.  (Added 06/11/08 by Ruth S)

Daffodil Day Donation!

The Cancer Council is one of Pearsons house charities that we strongly support.  This year for Daffodil Day we donated 50% of our daffodil sales from the 'Gift of Hope' and purchases of daffodils on 22 August 2008.   We are pleased to announce that we have donated at total sum of $ 1703.72 to the Cancer Council.  We would like to sincerely thank all our customers who supported this good cause this year and helped us to achieve this great result! Applications now open for Trainee Florists (x2 positions)!

We are looking for two budding florists to start as trainees in January 2009.  The successful candidates will be employed full time by Pearsons Florist and work in our design centre at Stanmore, and at our Sydney stores. 

In addition, our trainees will receiving funding to attend Pearsons School of Floristry one day per week for a year.  At the end of the traineeship program, they will receive the nationally recognised Certificate III in Floristry.

Lilies Galore!

We have an abundance of lilies in our coolrooms!  Enjoy these beautiful long stemmed blooms in a multitude of colours - pink, white, mauve and red.  Most lilies have markings on them either with spots or brush strokes and all have 6 tepals on each flower.  (Added 08/09/08 by Ruth S)

Warm colours for winter!

Given the chilly weather of late, here is an idea to warm things up...surround yourself with warm colours in your home and office space.  Colour plays an integral part in design and from a florists’ point of view, flowers with a warm tone can do wonders to your mood and emotions.  Flowers that come in a variety of warm colours for the season include vibrant gerberas, classic roses and stunning tulips which come in colours such as orange, red, yellow and mauve.  (Added 11/08/08 by Jo R)

Daffodil Day – 22 August 2008

Pearsons Florist proudly supports the Cancer Council and Daffodil Day this year, by donating 50% of daffodil sales from our ‘Gift of Hope’ arrangement during 18-22 August 2008.  Furthermore, 50% of daffodil sales will also be donated when purchasing bunches of daffodils from any Pearsons Florist store on Daffodil Day.  Daffodil Day has been run nationally in Australia since 1992 and the daffodil flower is the international symbol for hope.  (Added 07/08/08 by Ruth S)

Floristry Fashion!

Just like clothing fashions change every season on the catwalk, so is the case in the floristry world!  This year, the word is out...big blooms are in vogue!  Pink rose varieties such as ‘Topaz’ and ‘Pink Intuition’ have blooms on average of 6.5 cm.  For those that like traditional white roses, ‘Anastasia’ and ‘Talea’ have blooms that are nearly 8 cm at its peak! I just wanted to ask some advice on how to make my cut flower arrangements last longer?

Hi Wilted Flowers,

Thank you for your question.  There are general guidelines you can follow to help flowers last longer.  Firstly, Pearsons Florist recommends using the flower food (provided upon purchase) diluted in a vase of lukewarm water.  If this is not available, you can substitute the flower food for 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, sugar, aspirin or bleach which will help hinder the growth of bacteria and feed the flowers.

Also, when you change the water every other day, cut about 2 cm off the flower stems on an angle with sharp secateurs or a knife and remove all leaves below the waterline.  Lastly, keep the flowers away from direct sunlight, other heat sources and draughts as this can all affect the blooms!

Flowers and our workplace!

Apart from the incredible beauty we all admire from flowers, there is growing scientific research being conducted around the positive emotional impact they have on our well-being!  A recent university research study has shown that flowers and plants in the workplace provide employees with a happier working environment!  This has contributed to an increase in idea generation, more creative problem solving skills and overall better work performance and productivity!  (Added 03/07/08 by Jo R)

Spring is here early!

Bring a touch of spring into your home early, with beautifully scented Freesias!  Fresh from the flower market, Freesias are available in a spectacular array of colours – purple, white, yellow and mauve.  Did you know that Freesias originated in South Africa and got its name from Dr Freese (1785-1876), a local from Kiel in Germany.  (Added 01/07/08 by Ruth S)

In season and beautiful right now...Tulips!  We have tulips in yellow, orange, red, pink and stunning white too.  Did you know...  Tulips originate from the Middle East and their name comes from the Turkish word for a turban.
