Mothers Day - Sunday 9th May 2010 - Flowers, Gifts, Ideas
Why celebrate Mothers Day?
Quite simply,…if it wasn’t for your mother, you wouldn’t be here today!
The moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of that wonderful mother of mine;
The birds never sing but a message they bring
Of that wonderful mother of mine.
Walter Goodwin, music, and Clyde Hager, lyrics,
"That Wonderful Mother of Mine."
Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920
The History of Mothers Day
The origin of Mothers Day started had its beginnings in Ancient Greece. This was part of an annual spring celebration to honour Rhea who was the Mother of Gods.
Other traditions included early Christians in England who celebrated Mothers Day as the fourth Sunday of Lent in honour of the Virgin Mary. Over time, this tradition has shifted to the American celebration of Mothers Day which had its origin from the Civil War. In 1907, Mothers Day became a national event in USA and in 1915, USA President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the 2nd Sunday of May as Mothers Day.
Mothers Day in Australia
The origin of Mothers day in Australia was first celebrated in Burwood Presbyterian Church in the 1920’s. The tradition was associated with giving fresh flowers to mothers as a symbol of love and gratitude.
Mothers day is a way to recognize the special role and contribution women make to firstly bring children into the world and the many sacrifices they make to care and nurture children as they become adults themselves. It is the way to send a heart-felt thank you to your Mum for everything she has done for you. This is best said with a beautiful bunch of fresh flowers which will undoubtedly delight any mother who receives it.
